From the stupid parents category: Last week, a 9-year-old Alabama girl ate some candy bars. Then, when asked about what she ate, the girl lied to her grandmother. The grandmother and the girl’s stepmother decide to punish the girl for lying.
Ok. No big deal here. Girl lied. Girl punished. Happens every day, right?
Except this girl’s punishment was like a scene from football training camp. They made the poor girl run. And run. And run. Until they told her she could stop. Problem is, they never told her to stop. She ran for 3 hours. Then she collapsed, having suffered from seizures and severe dehydration. She was put on life support and died a few days later.
Police later arrested 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard and 27-year-old Jessica Mae Hardin in connection with the death of the girl, Savannah Hardin. (In a sad twist of faith, Jessica Mae Hardin gave birth two days after Savannah died.)
“She was extremely dehydrated and had a low sodium level, much like that of a marathon runner with no runner,” sheriff Todd Entrekin said to the local newspaper, the Gadsden Times in Alabama.
The Gadsden Times reported that Savannah got chocolate candy bars from someone on the school bus, and her family alleges she had a bladder condition and wasn’t supposed to have chocolate because of it.
I don’t think it needs to be said here how stupid the grandmother and stepmother was in this situation. They are not the first parents who took child abuse to a whole different level. What I’m trying to understand is why this particular punishment? Why’d they make her run? To burn the chocolate out of her system?
I just don’t get it. But Entrekin, the sheriff, summed it up perfectly when he said. “To be run to death is uncalled for.”

I read this today. It was so sad. I, like you, dont understand why they chose running. Neither one of them seem to be into running, maybe because it’s something they consider hard.
Wow!! That’s just too sad. What’s wrong with not allowing her to watch T.V. or take her IPod from her or something along those lines?
How horrible. This is awful.
I feel so sad when I read this. Stupid parents. Poor girl.

I think they need to drop the step mom and grandma off in the desert and tell them to keep running til they get home or til the little girl comes back alive. I think they need to take the baby away and if it was my girl and I would push for both of them to have life in prison. They new what they were doing to her.
